This became effective from 1 November 2011. As a result, photoelectric smoke alarms must now be installed in all new homes built in the Northern Territory."

Senator Glenn Lazarus has vowed to improve smoke alarm laws in Australia. He slammed the inaction of the Australian Building Codes Board to amend Australia’s Building Code to mandate photoelectric smoke alarms in all Australian homes.
